According to Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement, the location, and the design of the kitchen play an important role in creating a healthy energy flow throughout your home and establishing the foundation for a balanced, harmonious life. In many houses, the kitchen is the center of the home and daily activities. It is the space where you cook, eat and gather with your loved ones. This is the reason why the kitchen is one of the biggest targets for remodeling. Homeowners continue to find various reasons for kitchen remodeling, including:
- Deterioration
- Need for a fresh look, new style
- Making it more functional with new technology appliances
- Upgrading it before selling the house, to increase its value
This duplex was built by my parents, so when we decided to remodel the house, the main reason was to honor them and preserve the great memories that the house of my family held. Instead of selling the duplex, we decided to renovate and remodel completely, by transforming it into a luxury vacation home.
Keys for a Successful Kitchen Renovation
No matter what your reasons may be for a kitchen renovation it's not an easy process. The key to a successful renovation is having a thorough design plan, and working with an experienced and inspired interior designer. We wanted someone who could create a warm and welcoming vacation house, where you could spend quality time with your friends or family. We hired Kitchy Crouse of KC Interior Design and the result just speaks for itself.
Originally the kitchen looked like a small, dark square box, separated from the rest of the house. Kitchy was inspired to tear one wall down, she basically changed the locations of everything in the kitchen, including plumbing and countertops. The new kitchen is a stylish space with an amazing ocean view, a breathtaking panorama that my father would have loved so much. My mother loved beautiful, chic things, so, I told Kitchy, the kitchen should look like a swanky place with a touch of New York sophistication.
One of the Kitchens of the Year in San Diego Home/Garden
The most stylish pieces of the kitchen are the black cabinetry and the waterfall-edge walnut island designed by Kitchy and fabricated by her husband Travis. The rose-gold faucet beautifully complements and compliments the white countertop and the black sink.
With an added 900-square-foot completely furnished deck, the new kitchen makes your stay in this house more pleasant and enjoyable. It is the perfect place to cook a gourmet dinner and savor a glass of wine in the evening with your loved ones. When I look around now, I think of my parents and how much they would love this new custom-made kitchen. They would be so proud of it, especially now that it was showcased in San Diego Home/Garden magazine as one of the kitchens of the year.
